What is the course?
The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) is an in-service teaching qualification, ideal if you are already working or volunteering as a teacher or trainer. You’ll consider both the theoretical and practical elements of your planning, teaching and assessing, analysing and demonstrating the theories and principles of education and training. It is a nationally recognised qualification, accredited through AIM Qualifications, tailored to you!
DET with The EMG includes the knowledge units for the Internal Quality Assurer qualification and the External Quality Assurer qualification, which means you will be able to work as an IQA or an EQA as well as a teacher!
Who is it for?
DET is for teachers, tutors, trainers, lecturers and instructors who work in FE colleges, adult and community learning centres, private training providers; or deliver work-based training such as within voluntary, community, private and public organisations.
DET is only suitable if you are teaching learners who are 14 and over.
We have helped chefs, beauty therapists, support workers, business development professionals, health and safety trainers, nurses, hairdressers, job coaches, HR managers and in-house trainers become more effective teachers in their chosen field.
Complete beginner to teaching? You'll need the Level 3 Award in Education and Training or Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training first!
What do I need?
You will need to have access to 100 hours of teaching over the duration of DET. You don’t need to be formally contracted as a teacher and teaching can mean a variety of things! Speak to us if you’re not sure if you can demonstrate the hours you need to.
You'll also need:
A relevant vocational and/or academic qualification of at least the level above that of your learners and ideally a minimum Level 3 qualification in your own area of specialism. This means, for example, if you want to teach level 2 graphic design courses, you own graphic design qualification will need to be at least a level 3.
A mentor / expert witness who is able to provide statements and written observations of your teaching. This person must be a qualified teacher and/or assessor.
Minimum core of literacy, language, numeracy and ICT (level 2). You can provide your level 2 (GCSE or equivalent) Maths and English certificates or we can carry out a quick assessment to ensure you're working at the required level.
To be at least 19 years old at the beginning of the course. We won't be able to register you if you're not!
English requirements: If you are not from a majority English-speaking country, you must provide evidence of English language competency. If you aren't able to provide proof of this, we can carry out an assessment to ensure you're working at the required level.
To be able to read and communicate clearly and accurately enough to meet the requirements of this course
To not have a criminal background which might prevent you from working as a teacher with young people or vulnerable adults. We won't be checking this, but applying for work as a teacher with a criminal background can be difficult.
Time and commitment: this is not a tick-box course! At level 5 much of your coursework will be self-study, research and independent learning. You’ll need to reference your external reading in every piece of work you submit.
How much time will it take?
If you're choosing classroom learning, the course will last for 2 years. You’ll attend 12 full-day sessions, and coursework will be set for you to do in your own time.
Distance learners can move through as quickly as they choose. We ask that you complete coursework within 2 years of starting the course.
This is a big commitment! It is equivalent to a post-graduate university course so it is important that you know you have the time to study before signing up. We are here to support you every step of the way, so you are never alone with your studying!

The unit will teach you to develop, use, and organise resources within your specialist subject, vocational or other area.
Evaluating Learning Programmes
You'll understand the principles of evaluating learning programmes and use evaluation methods and data to understand how these can be used to improve courses.
Understanding the Principles and Practices of Internally Assuring the Quality of Assessment
You will assess the knowledge and understanding required for the internal quality assurance of assessment. This is the knowledge unit of the IQA qualification!
Understanding the Principles and Practices of Externally Assuring the Quality of Assessment
You’ll assess the knowledge and understanding a needed for the external quality assurance of assessment. This is the knowledge unit for the EQA qualification!
Are there any exams?
No. Your work isn’t graded either: you either pass or you are referred, which means you have an opportunity to resubmit your work once per assessment, after which a charge is added. We will give you as much support as you need to pass first time! Your work will be assessed by your tutor.
Are there any observations?
There will be a minimum of eight observations of your practice, totalling a minimum of eight hours. You’ll be observed throughout the course and receive full feedback so that you can do more of what’s working and less of what isn’t.
Simulation of teaching (such as a microteach with a mocked-up audience) is not permitted.
I want to study via distance learning! How will the observations work for me?
You can send in a video of you teaching and your tutor will send you feedback. There are also opportunities for some observations to be completed by an expert witness within your organisations (restrictions apply).
Who is my tutor?
It's Sarah Harris. Sarah has worked in education for nearly 20 years; qualified with the Diploma To Teach In The Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) in 2011 and has been writing and delivering training for a variety of delegates for nearly 20 years. She has also worked in a mainstream school, has lots of experience in Alternative Education - including in prisons and with ex offenders - and is now running The EMG with her business partner Amanda Harriott. Sarah is on hand at any point to offer guidance or discuss your work.
How is the course delivered?
Whether you have chosen to learn via distance or classroom learning, you will get:

A workbook, which will take you through the entire course, step by step
Linked access to your e-portfolio so you can see your own progress at any time
DET is offered via classroom face to face learning, on Zoom, in cohorts, and via distance learning. You’ll complete a variety of different assessments that cover all learning styles.
If you’re a distance learner and you feel you would benefit from some Zoom support, you can pay for additional tutorials at any time, or even upgrade to full classroom learning.
How much will it cost?
DISTANCE LEARNING: £1500
Payment plans available for individuals:

You can upgrade to full classroom or Zoom learning at any time for an additional cost or purchase additional tutorials.
CLASSROOM LEARNING: £3000
